The purpose of this FAQ is to minimize the amount of questions from new users in the chat. Therefore, if you ask something that is covered in this FAQ, you will probably receive a less than desirable response from other users. Please remember that the other users have seen most of your questions many, many times, and having the same questions repeated gets tiring very quickly. Please read all the information contained below, see Further reading for more detailed guides, and if you feel that your question has not been answered, look again. If you still cannot find an answer to your question, please ask in the chat or mail Gasmaster.

Rudiments

What is the purpose of The Kill Everyone Project?
Virtually kill everyone on the Earth. Each mouse click is counted as one death.
Are you serious?
Would we build up a complex database client/server system were we not serious! Fictional violence (even totally off-screen) is great fun and the game is a great time killer. However, most of the real people are nice (although somewhat boring) and should not be killed.

Gameplay

What is Rank?
Your ranking amongst all the players. The Next rank and Previous rank entries tell the username of the next and previous player. If your rank is 1234/10000, the Next rank will tell you who's the 1233th player.
What is Gap?
The difference of kills between you and the previous or next player.
How do I kill people?
Click on the "Click here!" button.
Ok, now my finger is sore. What can I do?
A wise man once said, "it rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again." Keep killing, and you too can dress up like Buffalo Bill.
What happens when everyone is killed?
We don't quite know for sure, but we expect something like this to happen. All the dialogue would of course be in Chinese...
UPDATE (April 2007): We were given a Bonus land to rebuild. We chose to kill its inhabitants too. When they are killed, it's anyones guess.
Why did the progress bar just jump backwards?
The Kill Everyone Project contains some counter-measures against cheating. A cheater was probably caught and their account disabled. Thus, their score was was substracted from the total body count.
Why does the Total KPM vary a lot?
The Total KPM is calculated using the difference between total kills of two consecutive data loads. People send the data at different times and intervals and this causes the variance.
Why did the "Click Here!" button just disappear?
Either you missed the button by clicking on either side of it or you broke the clicking speed limit (see below).
What is considered cheating?
Programs, scripts or other automated means that send mouse click signals to the Flash application or forge the data traffic between your browser and the server. If you maintain a too high KPM rate for too long or you fail a security check, your account will be disabled. There's nothing to worry if you play a fair game though. The decision whether a player is a cheater or not is based on a longer sampling. The maximum limit is 900 for the session KPM and 1500 for the last minute. When either maximum is reached, the Click Here! button will disappear and fade back in, rendering you unable to click for a few seconds.

Mousekeys are not considered cheating. Neither is using multiple mice. It's the presses (and thought) that counts, not the device.
What is MouseKeys? (Windows users only)
MouseKeys is a tool in the Accessibility Control Panel. Activate MouseKeys by pressing Alt+Shift+NumLock simultaneously, which brings up a pop-up window. We highly recommend that you enter "Settings" and turn off "Show MouseKey status on-screen," otherwise Windows Explorer is prone to crash. Once activated, MouseKeys are used by pressing the 5 or + keys on the numeric keypad, which is then interpreted as left-clicking by the computer.
It seems I was disabled! What can I do?
Primarily, try to contact a site administrator on the chat. If you fail to do that, you should send a message to Gasmaster. Unless you were blatantly cheating, chances are your account will be restored. Not that you should try to go too fast: restoring your account will cost you 10% of your kills.
There was a blackout / my computer crashed / dog peed on my keyboard when the security check appeared!
You will still lose the 10%, unless you can prove the cause of the disabling of your account. Unfortunately, this is the only possible way to fight cheating. With this policy, those who are disabled without their own fault (and cannot prove it) will lose kills unrewardedly, but the entire game works better. The alternative would be better for those disabled without their fault, but the game would be ridden with cheaters. The penalty makes cheating as little appealing as possible and the gains are bigger than the shortcomings.
Can I transfer my kills to someone else?
No, sorry. You have to earn your kills yourself.
Can you move my kills from one account to another?
Not any more.
Can I use multiple browsers or computers at once?
Yes, you can, but you should not, since it is to no avail. Because of caching of data, the different sessions will just overwrite the score of each other and only the kills of one of the sessions will eventually be saved. There might be also unforeseeable side effects, even if you used the other browser for only chatting. Lost kills due to multiple sessions will not be restored.
I was treated unfairly!
That could happen. We acknowledge and admit that users sometimes get treated unequally. However, rather than favouring a specific user, people get treated unequally randomly.

It would be an enormous job to create a complete and comprehensive set of rules which to abide. It would require lots of documentation, procedure definitions and booking the actions taken. Not to mention that admins would have to memorize all this. In other words, way too much work. We have chosen a lighter method: to administer the site by gut feeling. The downside is the occassional lack of uniformity.
Can I use multiple accounts?
(In full effect from 06 March 2005) Yes, but it is not suggested, unless you have a safe reason for doing so. Besides that, multiple accounts are liable to be disabled after much probation. Here are some reasons for this:
  • The most obvious reason is that multiple account creation is now considered an exploit to go over KPM limit. (Equivalent to cheating.)
  • Cheating by clicking at an illegal rate denies other users their deserved share of kills.
  • It can be considered as 'squatting' on ranks which are deserved by other users. (Equivalent to denial.)
  • Using multiple accounts to cause confusion in the chat will also be treated as disruptive behaviour. (Equivalent to spam.)
The above list is not exhaustive. In addition to the text in the question prior to this, administrative action will take much time, as everything is done on a case by case basis. It will be helpful if users stop pestering the admins for immediate action. Too much repetition is very irritating and will not be good for the record.

Chat

Why was I SPANKED?
SPANKings occur for various reasons, all at the Administrators' discretion. Most often it is for humorous reasons, but once in a while the Admins will punish for outright stupidity (for example, repeatedly asking a question listed in this FAQ), or other grievious acts of violating chat etiquette.
Why are they putting little "n00b" stickers on my name?
The term n00b is Internet jargon for new person; it infers that you are new and/or inexperienced. The stickers themselves are perfectly harmless, there are no ill effects other than the slight crushing of dignity. In addition, the stickers are not permanent, as they disappear along with the line of text it was attached to. Common reasons for being n00bed are: asking questions otherwise answered in this FAQ, boasting of a low score, complaining of hand or finger fatigue, or simply being clueless. To be fair, at least two people are required to n00b an individual in order to place such a sticker before it appears. A minimum of 500,000 kills is required to be granted the ability to n00b others.
How do I start playing the chat games?
Type "!play [game name]" into the chat, e.g. "!play Acronymania".
How do I play the HangGnome game?
You will see a phrase in the black box at the top of the chat window, with each letter replaced by a star. Similar to the game of Hangman, you have to guess what those letters are, or guess the complete phrase. Make a guess by placing a "!" before each letter or before your complete phrase. For example, if you want to guess the letter "E", type "!e" or "!E". If you choose to try to complete the whole phrase, make sure you type the appropriate punctuation in the phrase. Incorrect guesses will be tallied, up to a maximum of eight for the group. You can make one guess every 3 seconds. If the phrase isn't completed or guessed, the game will go on until the phrase is completed, too many wrong guesses are made or time (one minute) runs out.
How do I play the Acronymania game?
A series of four or five letters is given, from which you must create a phrase, with each letter forming the first letter of each word. For example, given the letters "ILPA", you can create the phrase "I love playing Acronymania". To submit this, you must put a "!" in front of the phrase, e.g. "!I love playing Acronymania". Once the timer counts down to zero, you have the opportunity to vote on the best phrase from a list of phrases submitted by others (you cannot vote on your own phrase). Submit your vote by typing an "!" followed by the number of your choice, e.g. "!3".
I don't understand what people speak!
Although this site is in Finnish and English, you may freely speak whatever language you choose in the chat as long as you comply to the general netiquette.

Technical

The Go Kill'Em page is empty!
You will need the Flash Player.
My browser crashes when I ignore, unignore or save my settings!
As far as we know, this has happened only with Windows 98 or ME. There seems to be a bug related to saving or loading cookie-like data in some older version of Flash Player. The best thing to do is to ensure you have the most recent Flash Player.
The game won't work!
It should. Be sure you have Flash Player 7 (or 6) installed and your security settings allow the Flash application to communicate with the server. The chat needs to have access to port 31666 - some firewalls might block that. Alas, we do not provide any technical support. Macromedia support might have some good advice.

Other

How can I become an Administrator?
Be fair, smart, a long time user, and active. The administrators have a LOT of power over the site so you have to gain the trust of others to be inaugurated. Those considered for new admins are given a chance to accept or decline. Most importantly, don't repeatedly ask to be an admin - admin access requests won't be responded to, so don't bother sending them. Also, don't bother making a song and dance about there not being enough admins in the TKEP chat. By all means voice your opinion, but don't expect it to be acted upon. Remember there is an /ignore function. Admins aren't usually essential in the chat. Remember, they do many other things on the website.
I need an admin, but I don't know any! Is there a list somewhere?
Not anywhere you can see.
Is Logitech somehow involved?
No.
Media exposure?
Why was the site down a long time?
Some part of homokaasu.org gained too much popularity. The Gematriculator was one of the first things to cause this, and we had to get a dedicated server. Other causes have included The Rasterbator and most recently The 80zer. Popularity of different parts of homokaasu.org can also cause considerable lag while playing TKEP. The site was temporarily unavailable for about a month, September 2003.
